The Children of the New Forest, Frederick Marryat, John Gilbert Illustrations, George Routledge & Sons, 1870s, Bickers and Son Fine Binding

$200.00

This is a very early edition of Children of the New Forest, an important work by Marryat, considered one of the first young adult novels. The story focuses on 4 orphan children trying to survive in the forest during the English Civil War of the 1600s .

Illustrated throughout in black and white by John Gilbert. Very beautiful, fine prize binding, stamped on front free endpaper by Bickers and Son, London.

Rubbing to spine, corners and cover edges. Scuffs to covers. Top spine end very worn and rubbed. Light wear along front hinge. Gilt very bright with elaborate school emblem of Victoria College on front cover. Binding overall sound with no detachments, but text block sits unevenly. Foxing, light stains throughout.
