"The period embraced by this work (1800 to 1815) forms decidedly the most important era in the History of Modern Times. Whatever difference of opinion may exist respecting the character of the principal actor throughout this eventful epoch, who occupies the stage from the commencement of the drama to its very close, it is impossible to deny him transcendent military genius, combined with political and legislative talents of the highest order. By means of these, and by the force of circumstances, as well as by his insatiable ambition, his iron will, and his almost superhuman energies and activity, he not only raised himself with giant strides to the sovereignty over a mighty Empire, but achieved those wonders which throw an air of romance around the age of Napoleon." -Editor's Preface
